Norm was born on March 20, 1930, in Keyser, WV. He lived his early years in Pittsburgh, PA and moved with his family to Maryland in 1941. He was a 1953 graduate of the University of Maryland and subsequently served two years in the U.S. Army.
On March 27, 1954, he married Ruth Burton in Cumberland, MD. Norm spent most of his career as an analyst with the U.S. Civil Aeronautics Board in Washington, DC. He then went on to become one of the original volunteer members of the Archives Research Team at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum where he served for over 32 years.

Norm enjoyed reading, aviation history, music (especially dixieland jazz), and traveling the world with Ruth.

He is survived by daughters Nancy Crenca and Susan Richards, and grandchildren to whom he was known affectionately as "Tigger", Louisa Amsterdam, Joe Amsterdam, Sam Amsterdam, Jack Crenca and Meredith Crenca, and great-grandson Morris Amsterdam. His loving wife of 63 years, Ruth, passed away in April 2017.
