JAMES GEIGER SUCCUMBS TO INJURIES
James Geiger, whose tragic accident was reported last week, succumbed at the Hazlehurst hospital on Saturday night of last week, after lingering with a broken neck for several days. He, with some other boys were bathing at Wryecraft ford on Sunday afternoon, when he was tripped when undertaking to dive, striking bottom in about two feet of water and his neck was broken, rendering him helpless, when he was taken out of the water and rushed to the hospital. His body was paralyzed from his neck down and remained in this condition until death relieved his suffering.
He was reported to have been conscious to the end and was able to talk, while no hope for his recovery was held out to his family and friends. He was a young man 19 years of age. He graduated from the Wheeler County High School in the class of 1933. He was making his home in Vidalia and was visiting his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. B. E. Benton, when he met this tragic accident.
He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Malcolm Chesterfield, who could not be located after a vigorous search in the section of New England where she has been touring, and the late John L. Geiger, one sister, Mrs. James Thompson, of Vidalia, grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. B. R. Benton, and scores of relatives.
Funeral services were held from the Alamo Baptist Church Tuesday afternoon conducted by Rev. J. D. Rabun, of Lyons, assisted by Rev. C. A. Morrison of Lumber City, and Rev. M. W. Flanders, pastor of the local Methodist Church. Interment was in the family cemetery several miles south of Alamo.
The active pall bearers were: His class mates, Hugh Hill, Jr., Milton Harrelson, J. D. Hinson, Earnest Jenkins, Eulus Webster, W. E. Currie, Jr.
Honorary pall bearers were classmates and friends of Vidalia.
