BRAITHWAITE, Barbara Barbara Anne Trosper Braithwaite Born January 17, 1930 - Died December 4, 2021. Barbara was born to Courtney and Evangeline Trosper in Charleston, WV. Her formative years were spent in Beckley, WV and Roanoke, VA where she graduated from William Fleming HS and attended Roanoke College. She received a BA degree from Mary Washington College, where she was a member of the Concert Dance Group, the fencing team, Alpha Phi Sigma (honorary society) and Phi Sigma Iota, (honorary language fraternity). After graduation she taught English and physical education at Richlands High School in VA and had her own dance studio. She then received a scholarship to the University of NC for an MFA in dance. There she was the first student to present a dance-notated thesis of her final choreography. She studied dance in New York with Martha Graham, Hanya Holm, and Jack Potteiger. Barbara performed at Ashford General Hospital (now the Greenbriar), at the Veterans Hospital in Roanoke, VA, with The Common Glory in Williamsburg, VA, and with the Roanoke Civic Ballet. She taught modern dance and fencing at Wheaton College in Norton, MA and at The University of TX at Austin. There she met and married Philip Braithwaite, a graduate student and Fulbright scholar from Sheffield, England who became an international petroleum geologist. They had one daughter, Bridget Braithwaite (deceased), a summa cum laude graduate of SMU who later received her JD degree in law from The University of Texas at Austin. At age 56 Barbara received an MA in Literary Studies from UT Dallas and taught English at Brookhaven College for five years where she received the division Excellence in Teaching Award and the college Innovator of the Year award. She also taught a popular Senior Dance Exercise class for recreation centers in Richardson and Dallas, TX for 16 years for which she received a state award. After retirement she became a ventriloquist and entertained at nursing homes and hospitals for Arts for People, giving programs on Humor, The South, and Brain Jogging. Barbara was active in the Episcopal Church wherever she lived and worked with many community projects including compiling The History of Richardson and serving on the boards of the PTA and YWCA. She was a devoted Girl Scout leader of Troop 922 for seven years. When Barbara retired fully, she spent much of her time doing family genealogies, writing her memoir and poetry. Barbara was predeceased by her parents, elder sister Betty, and her daughter. She is survived by her husband, Philip, her niece Linda Barnett Smith and family in NC, and her nephew the Rev. Eddie Barnett, his wife, Wylette, and his son Brian, in VA, plus many remembered students and cherished friends in life. For many of the special things she did in life, she credited her devoted husband, Philip, for making them better and more interesting. A memorial service will be held 2:00pm, January 4, 2022 at the Church of the Holy Communion, 17405 Muirfield Drive, Dallas, TX 75287 at a future time. Her ashes will be buried in the family plot in the Mount Union Cemetery in Botetourt Co., Virginia.
