James was the son of James Pierce Patterson Sr and Ida Bell Humphries Patterson. He was educated in the Bibb County School System.

He was married to Christine Richardson Patterson for 21 years. He was preceded in death by 1 brother, Richard Lamar Patterson.

Survivors:
3 Sons: Jeffrey M. Patterson, Andre O. Patterson and Marvis Y. Patterson.
2 Sisters: Betty Ann Gabel and Minnie C. Moreland.
7 Grandchildren.

Services were held Saturday, December 18, 2021 at 11AM in the Chapel of Jones Brothers Mortuary in Macon, Georgia.
