While Monday, December 13th 2021 was Robert Fair Hanson, Jr's. last day on this earth, the memories his family carry with them will live on. He was 93 years old and up until the last year, it would have been 93 years young! Bob stayed active until the very end. He could be seen taking drives around Story City, driving the cart through Lowe's, (and forgetting his cane so many times they finally made a label for it), or having coffee with his morning crew at McDonald's.
Bob was born in Wakefield, Nebraska on August 2, 1928. He was one of two children born to Robert Fair Hanson and Ethel (Felt) Hanson. Because his parents needed to work, he was placed in first grade at age 4. As daunting as that challenge must have been, he rose to the occasion. He graduated from Wakefield High School at 16 years old. Upon graduation he worked until he joined the United States Marine Corps at 19 years old. He served for two years (even appearing as an extra on a John Wayne movie!) and returned home to attend Wayne State College. He majored in business and industrial arts and taught for 24 years. First in Villisca, Iowa and then in Sibley, Iowa where he taught industrial arts for 23 years. He was an incredibly talented craftsman and he could be found many evenings in the high school shop working on woodworking projects for his family.
In addition to teaching in Sibley, Bob also worked a number of parttime jobs there. He worked at the Standard Oil gas station, Rupiper's Hardware Store, and in the summer's he taught driver's education. Included among those driver's ed students were his daughters and the fact that he didn't retire after teaching his oldest daughter was a miracle! He began hail adjusting in the summers for Farmer's Mutual Hail Insurance Company and that became his full time job in 1981. In order to take that new job he relocated from Sibley, Iowa to Story City, Iowa. He worked full time for them until his "retirement" at age 65. However, he worked for them parttime until he was well into his 80s. Sitting around doing nothing was never something he was good at!
Through the years Bob enjoyed woodworking, golfing, landscaping, and attending his grandchildren's activities. He loved decorating for the holidays, and his homes were always beautifully decorated for Christmas. One of the things he built was a Santa with sleigh and reindeer that he put on the roof every Christmas. Another lifelong hobby/passion, was being a Husker fan. That was as much a part of Bob as breathing. Saturdays during football season you would find him decked out in Husker gear and cheering them on. He always said he hoped he lived long enough for them to have one more winning season. Alas, that particular wish was not fulfilled. He didn't just deck out his home and himself for game day. He also decked out his dog, Leo, in Nebraska gear. While football games were the Saturday activity, Sunday's activity was church. He was an active part of his church in Ames and regularly attended until he was unable to do so.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Helen. He is survived by his three daughters, Amy Jo Hanson of Zuni, New Mexico, Julie Kay Goecke of Nevada, Iowa, and Bobbi Jean Bruns of Ames, Iowa. He is also survived by five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. His family will always remember him as someone who worked very hard his whole life to make sure they had everything they needed. That's a beautiful legacy.
