Frank Santiago, June 10, 1937-October 22, 2021. Frank Santiago passed away peacefully on October 22, 2021 at PM Memory Care in Omaha, NE after a battle with Alzheimers. Frank was born in New York City June 10, 1937 and grew up in Queens where he would play street baseball with fellow Yankee fans. He began his award-winning journalism career under the mentorship of Pulitzer juror and Editor John P. McCormally at the Hutchinson (KS) News. A fellowship at Stanford University was followed by positions at the Omaha World Herald, USA Today, and the Des Moines Register and Tribune. Frank's passion for reporting "the story" included writing extensively about the disappearance of Johnny Gosch, the Sioux City plane crash and the Great Flood of Des Moines in 1993. After retirement from the Des Moines Register, he volunteered for the Obama campaign and treasured his opportunity to meet with the President. He enjoyed getting together with his Des Moines Register colleagues. Preceded in death by parents, Marie and Cornelius Santiago, sister Maria Santiago, wife Melissa Lehman. Survived by son Chris Santiago (Kirsten), grandchildren Isabel and Owen, Chicago, IL; son Jamie Santiago, Scottsdale, AZ; and former wife Judy Santiago, Omaha, NE. Memorials suggested to Alzheimer's Assn. or The Audubon Society.
