Howard B. Martin – 94, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, passed away Wednesday, December 15, 2021, at his home. He was the son of the late Ernest A. and Susie L. Martin and was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Rebecca Leigh Martin, three sisters, Callie Beck, Hattie Sullivan, Ethel Blankenship, brother, James Martin, step-mother, Vera Martin and step-brother, George Henderson.
Howard began working for L&N Railroad at the age of 16. He later joined the Navy and served as a destroyer escort during WWII. After the war he returned to the railroad and retired from CXS as a superintendent. He was an avid golfer and fisherman. He was a member of Silverdale Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, and was very active with the Sunday school class.
Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Margaret D. Martin, of Chattanooga, TN, two sons, Dale Martin, of Pensacola, FL, Terry Martin (Kathy), of Richmond, VA, three grandchildren, Jillian Martin, Kaylan Martin, Matthew Martin (Wendy), great grandson, Vinny Martin and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, December 18, 2021, in the Silverdale Baptist Church chapel with Rev. Tony Walliser officiating. Graveside committal will be held at 12:30 pm, Monday, December 20, 2021, in the Chattanooga National Cemetery with military rites being conducted.
