Son of Edward and Priscilla (Alden) Cross. He was a 1965 graduate of West Bridgewater High School. He attended Wheaton College in Illinois and then with his new wife, he continued his education at Wake Forest University. They returned home where he earned his law degree at Boston University. Although he studied law, he ran an international company, Component Manufacturing Services. Surviving are his wife of fifty-four years, Susan Barker Cross of West Bridgewater; two daughters, Kimberly Cross Meyer and her husband, Warren, and Rebecca Cross Pratt and husband, Marty; three grandchildren, Allison, Christopher, and Randolph; two brothers, Douglas and his wife, Deborah, Lawrence and his wife, Valerie; two sisters, Gretchen, and Beverly Baird and her husband, Richard; and sister-in-law, Sandra.
