Richard "Dick" Collins, was born on February 25, 1942 on a farm in Swift County Minnesota, the son of Vincent and JoAnn (DeVaan) Collins. He was baptized on March 8, 1942 at St. Bridget's Catholic Church in DeGraff and received his First Communion there on May 14, 1950. He was confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Murdock on July 5, 1954.

He lived east of Murdock until he was one and a half years old, when the family moved to a farm north of Murdock. At the age of 3 the family moved south of DeGraff and when Richard was nine years old they moved to the family farm east of Murdock. He attended country school until the 3rd grade and graduated from Murdock High School in 1960. Upon his graduation Richard joined the National Guard and served for 6 years after attending basic training at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri. Following basic training he moved to St. Paul, Minnesota where he worked at the South St. Paul Meat Packing Plant. In 1961 he returned to Murdock and started farming with his brother Robert.

On August 19, 1967, Richard was united in marriage to Paulette Ann Bass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. This union was blessed with over 54 years of marriage and five children. After their marriage they purchased their house in Murdock. He also purchased a 1967 John Deere 4020 for Paulette as a "wedding present". In 1968 they purchased land south of Murdock where the farmstead would be built, and their family raised.

He was a member of Farm Bureau since 1980, Corn and Soybean growers, a volunteer fireman for 25 years, served as a member of the KMS school board for 10 years and First State Bank of Murdock Board of Directors for 10 years. His commitment to his faith and Sacred Heart Catholic Church began in his youth as an altar server. Richard was also a Eucharistic minister, served on the cemetery board, finance committee, and showed a personal responsibility for the maintenance of the Parish facilities. Richard loved spending time with his family, taking them on many family roads trips across the United States, going biking, swimming, waterskiing, and working together.
