He was born on Aug. 30, 1956, at Parsons to Merle Eugene "Gene" and Peggy Ann (Myers) Cowen. Mark grew up at Parsons and attended Parsons schools. He later obtained his G.E.D. and an electrician certification.
Mark worked as an electrician at the Katy and Union Pacific railroads. He later obtained his commercial driver's license and worked as a truck driver for Warren Transport.
Mark loved Kansas City Chiefs football, going to the lake, camping, hanging out with family and friends, listening to rock and country music. He loved telling stories. He was a member of the union when he worked for the railroad.
He married Valerie Merchant on June 4, 1977, at the Westside Christian Church in Parsons. They later divorced.
He is survived by his life partner, Jennifer Fowles of the home; his daughter, Kelli Roberts and her husband, Eddie, of Girard; his stepchildren, James Horger III, Natalie Horger and Mitch Horger, all of Salt Lake City; four grandchildren; his sister, Kim Marquardt and her husband, Mark, of Parsons; several nieces and nephews; many cousins; and his trucking cat, George.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Mike Cowen.
A graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Oakwood Cemetery with Pastor David Keaton officiating. Burial will follow.
