James Gross
May 9, 1930 - August 11, 2021

U.S. Veteran
James Gross, age 91 went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, August 11, 2021 surrounded by family and friends at his home in La Mirada.

"Jim" was born May 9, 1930 to parents Harley (Charlie) and Irene Gross in Compton, California. His early childhood summers were spent at the family homestead with his Grandmother in Hesperia. He attended schools in and around South Central Los Angeles and Compton. He left high school a year early to work full time and help the family make ends meet. As an apprentice in an upholstery shop he learned to work with his hands and that was a gift he put to use the rest of his life. At age 20 he landed a job with Sears and Roebuck in Los Angeles where he met his future bride Helen Hasapes. Soon after, Uncle Sam called Jim to serve his country in Korea, so prior to his deployment the two eloped to Yuma, Arizona on December 31, 1950 and spent the next 68 years together. The couple settled in Lynwood after the war and raised three children, Susan Marie, James Michael and Patricia Ann (Gross) Clark. Summers were spent as a family traveling all over the western states in a pickup camper that Jim built himself. His immediate and extended family was his priority in everything he did and he always looked for ways to help others. He moved the family to La Mirada in 1971 and continued his career with Sears until 1988. He never completely retired though, aside from his cabinet making and handy man work for family and friends, Jim loved Baseball and in Early 2000s he worked an encore career as an usher at Angel Stadium until 2018. A sentimental man of deep conviction and loyalty, he will be missed by all who knew him.

Jim was a skilled carpenter. He built the trophy case at Saint John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church in Anaheim, CA as well as the church sign on Covina Boulevard that was out in front of the church at Saint Nectarios Greek Orthodox Church in Covina, CA.

Jim is survived by his Children Susan and James (Michele) Gross, son-in-law Mike Clark, grand children Kevin (Rachel) Clark, Kristen, Kaylee and James Gross, Carlie and Cammie Swa, Brad Heller, Great Grand Daughter Charlie Ann Clark, many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Helen, daughter Patricia (Gross) Clark, sister Sallie (Gross) Hardy, brothers Leroy Gross and Robert Rose.

The family invites those who were blessed to have Jim in their life to join them for a Christian funeral service at 1:00pm on Sunday, August 29, 2021 at Chapman Funeral Home, 702 E. Chapman Avenue, Orange, California, followed by burial 11:00am on Monday, August 30, 2021 at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery, 7845 E. Santiago Canyon Road, Orange, California.
