Katharina (Kathe) Sandkuhl, 87, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Dec. 7, 2021. A longtime resident of St. Marys, Kathe resided in Dublin, Ohio with her husband, Allen, for the past four years. Kathe was born in Ober-Eidisch, Transylvania, Romania on Dec. 20, 1933.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 68 years, Allen, and four children Becky (Bill) Klosterman, David (Marsha), Doug (Sue), and Eric (Tuki). Eight grandchildren brought her much joy: Betsy (Zach) Lewis, Nate Sandkuhl, Andrew (Katherine) Klosterman, Kari (Jeff) Huddle, Alex (Ashley) Sandkuhl, Summer Sandkuhl, Joshua Sandkuhl and Jacob Sandkuhl. Six great grandchildren lit up her eyes and heart: Parker and Beckett Lewis, Holden and Archer Sandkuhl, Lina Sandkuhl, and Jordan Huddle.

Kathe was preceded in death by her parents, Johann and Katharina Klein; brother Johann Klein and infant daughter, Deborah.

Kathe's parents and her older brother were farmers in their Transylvanian homeland. They fled their home in 1944 during WWII to escape the effects of invading Partisans and Russian troops. The family home was destroyed by fire. The family eventually found support in a camp for displaced persons in Austria until March 1952 when sponsored by Church World Service, they were able to emigrate to St. Marys. Each of the family became citizens of the United States in May 1958 and were grateful and proud to be called Americans.

Kathe married Allen on Dec. 27, 1952. Over time, and while raising children, she worked at Seiberling Latex, St. Marys Cotton Mill, and in the cafeteria at McBroom School. Kathe was known as an excellent cook and baker and a fun-loving grandmother. She and Allen were active in the Sister Cities Program and sponsored two exchange students from Japan.

A celebration of Kathe's life will be held at a later date. Cards of condolence may be sent to Allen Sandkuhl, 6480 Post Road, Apt 318, Dublin, OH 43016. Should you wish to make a donation in Kathe's honor, please consider the Alzheimer's Foundation of America at AlzFdn.org.
