Kenneth T. Kirtland
Northampton – Kenneth T. Kirtland, 83, of 96 Florence Road, died Sunday at Cooley Dickinson Hospital. He was a manager of the former Ruby's Furniture Store in Northampton and was a supervisor of Ruby's in Easthampton and also Brattleboro, Vt. He was also a manager for the former Hadley Furniture Store, retiring as general manager for the former Calduwood Co. Born in Chatham, N.Y., he moved to this area as a child and graduated from Northampton High School and the former Northampton College. He was a communicant of St. Mary's of the Assumption Church, a member of the Northampton Recreation Committee from 1977-1980; and for many years was involved with youth football. He was also a former Hampshire County deputy sheriff, and former member of Business Division of the Northampton Chamber of Commerce. He was a Air Force veteran of World War II and trained pilots of B-24s in instrument flying and landing techniques and assisted in the formation of the All Weather Flight Training Program. His first wife, the former Doris M. Duffy, died in 1987. He leaves his wife, the former Mayon Sullivan; his family; a sister; 22 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Tuesday morning at Pease Funeral Home and in the church with burial in Spring Grove Cemetery, Florence. Calling hours will precede the service.
