FORMER SPRINGFIELD MAN DIES IN FALL FROM RIVER CLIFF
DUPO - A former Springfield man was killed early Sunday morning in a fall from bluffs along the Mississippi River, according to St. Clair County Sheriff's reports.

Richard Earl Robbins, 35, of Gillespie was sightseeing near the river with six people when he fell 30 to 40 feet onto rocks and trees near the river bank, sheriff's report said.

He was taken by stretcher to the bottom of the bluffs and then by helicopter 6 miles to University Medical Center in St. Louis, reports said.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital late Sunday afternoon.

The group was heading for the bluffs, which afford a view of St. Louis, when Robbins, who was unfamiliar with the terraine, ran ahead, reports said.

He apparently came upon the unexpected drop-off and lost his footing, reports said.
