D'Mel was born in Mt. Calm, Texas, on November 8, 1942, to William E. and Verna Lane Danford. She spent her childhood years in the Mt. Calm area and attended Hubbard schools and Hillsboro High School. She married Ronald P. Cantrell on August 5, 1960 in Elm Mott, Texas. D'Mel was the Manager of Local 72 Electricians Federal Credit Union when she retired in 2004.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William E. and Verna Lane Danford, and a sister, Billie Jean Simecek. She is survived by her husband, Ronald P. Cantrell of Elm Mott; Son, Christopher Cantrell of Waco; Daughter, Glynnis Gaines and her husband Steve Gaines of Temple; and daughter Heather Cantrell and her husband Shannon Patton of Houston. Survivors also include two grandchildren, Christopher Gaines of Dallas and Matthew Gaines of Temple; nephew John Simecek of Hillsboro, and many cousins.
