NELSON
Joan Jean Nelson, age 89, of Ionia, passed away on Thursday, September 24,
2020. Joan was born on March 11, 1931, the daughter of J.H. and Mildred
(North) Higbee in St. Johns. On January 16, 1954, Joan married the love of
her life, Earl.
She enjoyed reading, gardening and growing anything. Joan was a lover of
animals. She was a teacher for many years and was active with the retired
teachers and State employee retirement services.
Joan is survived by her children, Michael (Roxanne) Nelson of Ionia and
Denise (Kenneth) Peabody of Ionia; grandchildren, Kevin (Christine) Peabdy,
Kimberly (Bruce) Hoeksema and Karen (Scott) Leak; great-grandchildren,
Ashley Reisbig, Justin Leak, Lindsey Leak and Kevin Hoeksema.
She is preceded in death by her husband Earl; brother, Jack Higbee; and
sister-in-law, Phyllis Higbee.
Funeral services will be held 1 PM Monday, September 28, at Shiloh Community
Church with Rev. Kenneth Harger officiating. Visitation will be 1-3 PM Sunday
at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia. Memorial contributions may be made to the
