Rachel was the daughter of John Daniel Carver and Mary Eugenia White Carver, both deceased.
Rachel, class valedictorian, graduated from Prospect Hill High School on May 1, 1942. She later graduated from Burlington Business College with a business degree. Rachel was employed by Cone Mills, Granite Finishing Plant, Haw River from 1963-1988.
She married Robert Lee Thomas of Mebane on December 15, 1944. They were married for 66 years until Bob's death on May 17, 2012.
Rachel was a member of Cross Roads Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon and elder and received the Honorary Lifetime Membership Award for the Women of the Church.
Rachel was a member of The Emma Harris Garden Club and dearly loved her plants, both inside and out. She also enjoyed cooking and loved to see others enjoy her food.
Rachel is survived by her children, Rosa T. Pennington of Gibsonville, Joyce T. Covington and husband Joe of Mebane, Dale T. McVey of Burlington, Dan Thomas of Chesapeake, VA, and Mary Jane T. Swing of Carrboro; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She is preceded in death by a grandson, Ryan McVey; a son in law, Gene McVey and six brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 9, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Cross Roads Presbyterian Church. Visitation will take place at Cross Roads Presbyterian Church from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to AuthoraCare Hospice at Home and Greater HomeCare Staffing of Mebane. Their loving care allowed Rachel to remain comfortable in her own home.
