Valeria married Lou Smith. She worked at the Redfield State Hospital until her retirement in 1994. After retirement she moved to Fargo, ND where she worked for the Fargo Public Schools and was active in her church ladies' aide at Plymouth Congregational Church.

Valeria enjoyed fishing and traveling. She often spent time at Long Lake near Park Rapids, MN, riding on her golf cart, boating on the pontoon, and spending numerous hours outside reading.
