A former Brooklyn area resident, Mrs. Elmer (Hilda May) Meeker, 85, died Feb. 26 at Texarkana hospital after a short illness. She had been visiting her two sons, Richard of Forman, Ark., and Cecil of Ashdown, Ark.

Mrs. Meeker was born in Tama county, Iowa, on Feb. 5, 1880, and was the daughter of Edward and Ellen House Carpenter. She was a teacher and was united in marriage with Elmer Meeker on March 13, 1900.

They lived in Kansas for seven years before returning to Iowa where they engaged in farming near Chelsea, Belle Plaine and Brooklyn. They later moved to Moberly, Mo., where they lived for 17 years. When Mr. Meeker retired they moved to Baton Rouge, La., and he died there on July 8, 1956.

The Meekers helped to establish the Church of Christ on Foster Street in Baton Rouge, after the group had assembled in their home for some time.
