James Edward Crews took his peaceful walk in the hand of our Lord on Thursday, December 2, 2021.

James was born on December 11, 1951, to the parentage of Leroy and Cora Bell Hawley Crews, and later his stepfather Johnnie Robertson, in Granville County. He attended G.C. Hawley High School and later graduated from South Granville High School in 1971. He was a member of Tally Ho Missionary Baptist Church where he formally served on the junior usher board, gospel choir, and their Boy Scout troop at an early age. He was also a frequent visitor of Mt Vernon Missionary Baptist Church.

He worked for many years at Athol in Butner, NC until their closing. He was a dedicated employee at Carolina Sunrock for 22 years until his passing. James loved going to work at Sunrock! His leadership team and co-workers at Sunrock were his second family and he took pride in the work that he did for them. He was known for training and mentoring employees at the Butner site and was known for making sure the men working was able to eat between jobs. He won NRMCA driver of the year for the company and was highlighted in the employee spotlight section of the Sunrock company newsletter.

James had a passion for mentorship. He was well known in the community for helping young men stay focused and giving them key lessons to help them succeed in life. He worked with the community sports association for years as a coach and umpire. He also had a passion for cars and restoring them.

James leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved wife Jewell Crews; Two stepdaughters, McKenzie Daniel and Kristian Daniel of Creedmoor, NC; Two grandsons, Tristan and Trevor; His brothers, Roy Crews of Butner, NC, Thomas "Pop" Crews (Kathy) of Portland, OR William Crews of Butner, NC, Rickey Crews (Angela) or Creedmoor, NC, Ron Robertson (Kesha) of Oxford, NC, and Kenneth Crews (Brenda) of Stem, NC; Special sons Eddie Ellis, Carl Anderson, Shannon Tapp, and Jermaine Hemmingway; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins that he loved dearly.

Graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, December 7, 2021, at South Granville Memorial Garden, Stem, NC.

Viewing 5:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. Monday, December 6, 2021, in Betts & Son Funeral Home Chapel.
