Joseph Maynard Wolf Black, age 74, peacefully departed us on December 4th 2021 at home in Lame Deer, Montana.

Maynard was born on Sep 4, 1947 to Josephine Goudreau and Oran Charles Wolf Black in Fort Yates, North Dakota. He was raised primarily by his grandparents in Birney village, where he also learned to speak fluent Cheyenne. While working as a housing counselor for the Northern Cheyenne Housing Authority, Maynard met his future wife Lois Cree at a conference in Billings, Montana. They would marry and have two children, Blaine and Waylon before separating. Maynard spent the majority of his life on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation, with time also spent in Salt Lake City, Utah, Las Vegas, Nevada and Phoenix, Arizona. Maynard loved country western music and styled himself in cowboy attire. He was an enthusiastic animal lover and managed to adopt animals everywhere he lived. He was known for his sense of humor and loved to tell stories while making people laugh, teasing being one of his love languages. Forthright and honest in his estimation of people, he was known to call people out when they needed to be, sometimes choosing to listen and then offer words of wisdom. Reading was one of his favorite pass times and he especially loved Louis L'Amour western books; he would always find time to look for new books to read. Always the connoisseur of traditional native cuisine, he loved dry meat stew, and frybread.

Despite losing his left leg below the knee and his "busted up hand" he never let that deter him from hard tasks. One of the family's favorite stories was the time he drove his dad's stick shift truck from Lame Deer to Phoenix to pick up his wife and kids. Though he had his struggles with alcoholism in life, he was finally able to kick the habit in later life and lived sober until his passing.

Maynard leaves behind a very large family who will miss him dearly. His two sons Blaine Joel Wolf Black of Westport, Washington and Waylon Charles Wolf Black of Mesa, Arizona. Brothers; Alvin "Buster" Wolf Black of Crescent City, California; and Royal (Kim) Wolf Black of Kearns, Utah. Sisters; Cecelia (Tomas) Varela of Phoenix, Arizona, Bonita "Leeta" (Wayne) Fletcher of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Carrie Braine of Lame Deer, Montana. Nieces and Nephews in Utah include Tia Wolf Black, Charlie Jo Wolf Black, Tom Wolf Black, Marvin Knowshisgun, Mandy Fletcher, Terilyn Mills, and Anthony Fletcher. Nieces and Nephews in Montana include Roberta Bement, Lawrence Monteau, Gustavo Moran, Custer Bement, Boogered Bement, Greg Wolf Black, Clara Whitecrane, Shanna Brady, Jennifer Kidder, and Rosie Wolf Black. He is also survived by a nephew Wilfredo Moran in Southern California.
