Gene was called home at the age of 94 from his home in Auburn, California on Sunday, November 14, 2021.

Gene was born and raised in Auburn where he attended Placer High School and Placer College. He was drafted into the U.S. Army during WWII, serving as a Combat Engineer in the Pacific Theater then he was stationed in Japan for one year prior to his discharge from the Army and returned to Auburn where he met and later married Irene Wagner Dahlberg, his wife of 57 years, who preceded Gene to heaven.

After the war, Gene chose a career in law enforcement, serving with the Placer County Sheriff's Office. He served with distinction, being the first Placer County Deputy to be promoted to Sergeant. Gene opened the Sheriff's Sub Station at Lake Tahoe and served as a pilot in the Arial Posse for the Sheriff's Office's first aviation unit.

Prior to his retirement, Gene served as a Federal Peace Officer for almost ten years.
Gene was a born-again Christian, attending the Church of the Rock in Auburn where he often spoke and taught. He later attended the Penryn Faith Center.

Gene was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, having a direct forefather serving as Lt. Colonel in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.
Gene had a lifelong passion for local history, especially mining. He knew Placer County like no other.
