Obituary (from the Allen Family Funeral Options website):

Donna Marie Self, the youngest of 5 children, was born to Edward Leonard Self and Rosa Lee Jackson Self on October 26, 1963. Reminiscing about Donna's earliest days as a baby, her oldest sister Pat describes how having Donna for a baby sister felt like having a real life-sized doll to play with. Pat says, "It was great practice for when I had my own to take care of a few years later." Donna's next youngest sister, Linda, remembers how Donna would line up her books in the hallway, then proceed to load them into her stroller, taking her books (as opposed to her dolls) for a walk.

In 1982, Donna graduated with honors from Plano Senior High School, where she enjoyed playing bassoon in the band and marching with the flag corp. Upon graduation, Donna enrolled at North Texas State University (now UNT) where she studied Elementary Education and was a member of Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society. Though Donna was the youngest in her family, everyone was proud of her when she became the first to graduate from college.

Upon college graduation, Donna became an elementary school teacher with Frisco ISD, where she remained for her entire 28 year career. Teaching children was not only Donna's job, but also her hobby and passion. She strove to make her classroom a haven, developing relationships with many of her students and their parents that continued for years to come. One parent recalled how Donna designed little books for her kindergarteners, filling them with pictures and mementos along the way, so each student would have a wonderful treasure trove of memories to look back upon from their time in class. It was simply part of Donna's nature to always be in teaching mode, and she absolutely loved her students, pouring herself into each one. Donna provided a safe and nurturing environment in which countless children felt loved and protected. Not surprisingly, Donna was voted the 1985-86 Teacher of the Year at Acker Elementary.

After Donna retired from teaching, she also began to shower her love on dogs and cats. As with many of her other interests, Donna went all-in, even starting her own pet and house sitting services. As a close friend described, "She was a dog lover, lover, lover. Her shoes were dogs, her shirts were dogs, she had dog signs, and pajamas and stationery. As much as she loved dogs, they loved her. There is no one that I would rather leave my dogs with than Donna. I had so much peace when they were with her. And I heard that from every dog owner I knew.''

Friends and family overwhelmingly describe Donna as thoughtful and generous. She never forgot a birthday or special occasion. She loved attending graduations, award ceremonies, and special events for her students, nieces, and nephews. Donna loved to give gifts and send special notes, texts, and Facebook messages just to let you know she was thinking about you. If she knew you had a particular interest, she was sure to remember it and likely to give you a gift related to it next time she saw you, or even just send a fun related meme or message. If Donna hadn't heard from someone in a while, she would call or text them just to check in. She was sincere and loyal, and truly cared about staying in touch with her family and friends.

Donna was funny, quick witted, and quirky. She laughed often, and enjoyed pranks. Always one with a flair for clothes, bags, and other personal items that were unique, she loved finding, collecting, and giving items that were off the beaten path. She favored the unique over the ordinary, and always managed to find novelty flavors of candy, chips, and drinks. She was also a collector, one of her most famous collections being hundreds and hundreds of one-of-a-kind pens and pencils. Other famous collections included stickers and lighthouses.

Always ready to help others, Donna was selfless and sacrificial. While she didn't like to be in the spotlight with regards to leadership, she was always the first to volunteer for supporting roles, and would characteristically do more than was expected. Donna loved to "forward" the love that she had been shown. After her parents Eddie and Rosa Lee passed away, Donna made an annual tradition out of going to a restaurant on each of their birthdays and anonymously treating someone to a meal in honor of their memory. She never met a stranger, and always looked for opportunities to love people where they were, and for who they were.

Donna was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Plano. One friend described Donna as "Jesus with skin on" because of the way she demonstrated His love to others. Donna attended many Christian concerts with friends, and she delighted in listening to and sharing Christian music. She expressed heartfelt gratitude, and publicly thanked God often for His many blessings to her. She spoke about Him, posted about Him, and even wore clothes that reflected her thankfulness for His work in her life.

So many more special memories could be shared about Donna. She loved adventures and challenges, from traveling and taking cruises with friends, to filling her walls with art from classes taken with family and friends at Painting With a Twist. She continued to stay involved with former colleagues on a personal level, and regularly volunteered for the Frisco Retired School Personnel Christmas Bazaar. She was always up for dinner and a movie with those she loved. She enjoyed fishing, bowling, crafting, puzzles, crosswords, brain teasers, and riddles. She was a big fan of both the Plano Wildcats and the Dallas Cowboys. Her Facebook page was filled with quotes about faith, encouragement, and God's care, as well as funny quotes, cute pets, patriotic sentiments, memes about children and dogs, top 20 lists, riddles and challenges.

Words cannot express the impact Donna has had on our lives. We are so thankful to God for giving us our dear Donna, "Little Sis", "Sister Self", "Aunt Donna", and "Ms. Self".

If Donna could speak to her friends and family today, we are confident that her greatest prayer for each of you would be that you come to know the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The gospel is the good news that Jesus, the Son of God, died for our sins and rose again, eternally triumphant over his enemies, so that there is now no condemnation for those who believe, but only everlasting joy. Isaiah 53: 4-6 says, "Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned — every one — to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all." Our prayer, and Donna's wish for each of you, would be that God would grant you repentance, leading to a relationship with His Son, Jesus Christ, the only one through whom we can approach God, our Father.

Donna was preceded in death by brothers Jimmy Self and David Self, and parents, Rosa Lee Jackson Self and Edward Leonard Self.

Donna is survived by sisters, Patricia Busch (Freddie) Grimsley of Plano and Linda Self Rodgers of Plano: Aunt Freddie Self of Plano; nephews Mike (Mary) Busch of Plano, Brian (Jean) McDonald of Haltom City, Chris (Kelly) McDonald of Canton, TX, and David Self of Cumby; nieces Lisa (Matt) Darwin of Plano, Sheila (Jessy) Smith of Cumby, and Courtney McDonald of Plano; numerous cousins, great nephews, great nieces, and dear friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Donna's name to fund research for ALS or Alzheimers at either iamals.com or act.alz.org.

Visitation will be from 9:30 am - 11:30 am on Monday, December 28, 2020 at Allen Family Funeral Options.

Burial is private, with family only.
