Herbert Lee "H.L." Brown was born on July 7, 1944 in Geary, OK to Henry and Thelma (McCoy) Brown. He passed away on December 3, 2021 in Oklahoma City, OK at the age of 77. Herbert graduated from Geary High School in 1963. H.L. was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame at NWOSU in Alva, OK. H.L. was one of the first three black student-athletes to enroll at Northwestern. He lettered in both baseball and basketball, and was Northwestern's winningest pitcher during his freshman and sophomore years. H.L. was a southpaw and had an unorthodox style of shooting; one handed from the outside, shooting upward from his hip. He also pitched left-handed and played 1st base. The Vietnam War interrupted his education and he served in the US Army during that time. H.L. was well-know and well-liked for being an outstanding citizen and for his athletic success. He also lived in El Reno where he was the assistant manager of an apartment complex.





Survivors Include: his children, James E. Shawnee, Sr. of Geary, OK, and Herbert Leon Shawnee of Geary, OK, 12 grandchildren, Lucretia, Louis, Jayden, Ian, Devin, Jayce, James, Jr, John, Charley, Hunter, Serenity, and Madison, his siblings, Jerlene Bush of MWC OK, Margie J. Brown of MWC OK, and Annette M. Brown of MWC, OK, two special nieces Angela Atwood Midwest City OK and Madeline Shawnee of El Reno, OK, as well as many other relatives and friends.



He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Thelma Brown, his siblings, Jack, Chester, and Albert Brown, Airy Moore, and Vivian Williams.



Services: Stegall-Long Fieldhouse, Saturday, 10:00 AM, December 11, 2021, Geary, OK

Officiating: Rev. Craig Jones, Rev. Bryant Foster, Rev. Waylon Upchego, and Mr. James Shawnee

Burial: Geary Cemetery, Geary, OK
