Manufacturer & railroad manager. Garrison learned the machinist's trade as a boy in Pennsylvania, prior to his coming to St. Louis. After he arrived in St. Louis in 1835, he took employment in the foundry & engine works of Kingsland, Lightner & Co. Five years later he formed a partnership with his brother Oliver & began the manufacture of steam engines & steam machinery of all kinds in St. Louis. This enterprise proved so successful that in 1840 they sold out their foundry & machine works & retired from this branch of industry with large fortunes. When the Ohio & Mississipi Railroad enterprise began, Daniel Garrison soon became identified with it & was one of main reasons the railroad was advanced to completion. He later became the vice-president & general manager of the Missouri Pacific Railroad & became vice-president when Mo-Pac was consolidated with the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad. He later built the Jupiter Iron-Works, one of the largest furnaces in the world, & still later created the Vulcan Iron Works in South St. Louis & served as managing director of the firm.
