Joseph Francis Miles, 84, of Monroe City, Missouri, passed away on Friday, December 3, 2021 surrounded by his family while praying the rosary at home.

Joe was born at home on November 20, 1937 in Indian Creek "Swinkey", Missouri to Lester Thomas and Julia Frances Crowley Miles. He attended St. Stephen's school in Swinkey, graduating in 1956.

On April 15, 1961 he married the love of his life, Marilyn D. Watson after a 5 month courtship. Together they had 10 children. Dianne Kunce of Monroe City; Judi (Don) Eckman of Monroe City; Cyndi (Steve) Goehl of Columbia; Lisa (Joe) Spalding of Monroe City; Bob (Regina Kendall) of Hannibal; Mike of Hannibal; Laura (Frank) Lucas of Monroe City; Donna (Joe) Dodd of Hannibal; Sarah (Alicia) Miles of St. Charles; and Vince (Katie) of Muscatine, Iowa.

He was a faithful member of Holy Rosary Church in Monroe City, Missouri as well as a member of the Men's Prayer Group at HRC. He was involved with Cursillo, REC & TEC.

As a young man he worked on the farm of Alfred Parsons. At the age of 19, he went to work for Kuhlman Diecasting where he worked for 45 years, until his retirement. He ran and could fix any machine and served as foreman for many years.
He was one of Missouri's Outstanding Senior Employees of 2000.

After his retirement, he spent many hours at his workbench at home making wooden toys, wheelbarrows, wagons, coat-trees, benches and many other things. He could fix about anything. He always said "If it's man-made, you can fix it!"

He loved mowing yards and sometimes mowed 20 yards a week. He was a passionate gardener and also enjoyed cooking. His potato soup could not be beat! He loved to dance and sing.

He was also a motorcycle enthusiast, getting his first one, a Harley Davidson, at the age of 10. He also learned to ride his bicycle backwards impressing all of his kids and grandkids.

He collected Cushman scooters and repaired/rebuilt them. He loved riding them in the hometown parades or just around town. He also displayed them at "Old Threshers."
If you ever visited him at home, you'd get the "Cushman Tour" seeing every scooter in the collection along with any of the treasures on his workbench. He loved to tell stories and chat with friends and strangers alike.
Joe was a very generous man, helping others in many different ways, whenever he could. He always encouraged his kids and grandkids to work hard and go to church. He'd say "Just do the best you can. That's all you can do."

However, what he loved the most was his family. Besides his 10 children and their spouses, he leaves behind his siblings Russell (Kay) Miles, Cele (Fred) Lilly, Albert (Ruth) Miles, sister-in-laws Pat Miles & Mary Miles, grandchildren Jay (Dawn) Kunce, John Kunce and Jack Kunce; Joe (Shelley Ellis) Eckman, Caroline Eckman and Bill Eckman; KJ Goehl, Leslie (Russell) Greenlaw, and Brock Goehl; Andrew (Lynn) Spalding, Luke Spalding and Natalie Spalding; Hillari Miles, Heidi Miles, Michael Miles II, and Patrick Miles; Logan Lucas, Beau Lucas and Audrey Lucas; Nathan Dodd and Abbi Dodd; Lennon Ruffner, Presley Ruffner and Gus Miles; and his great grandchildren Kyi Mitchell, Jeremy McNaughton, Shane McNaughton and Yuri Kunce; Baleigh Ellis & Leah Ellis; Wyatt Goehl; Weston Goehl, Beau Greenlaw, Blake Greenlaw and Lillian Greenlaw; Aamira Miles; Jaxyn Helm and Abel Miles, countless nieces and nephews and special friends Pete & Susie.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Tommy Miles and David Miles, brothers-in-law Gene Watson and John Watson & sisters-in-law Mary Watson and Barbara Watson; grandchildren Jillian Goehl, Kiri Mitchell, Madison Tate and Jillian Morrison and nephews Tim Miles and Steve Miles.
Visitation will be Wednesday, December 8 at Holy Rosary Church, from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm with the Rosary being said at 4:40 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, December 9, at 10:00 am also at Holy Rosary Church.
