A native of Durham County, he was a son of the late Ann Finnegan Gilbert and George Gaylord Gilbert, M.D. He was also preceded in death by one brother, William Marshall Gilbert, II.
Charles was a US Air Force veteran, serving as an Air Traffic Controller. Following his time in the service, he worked as an ambulance driver for EMS in the Black Mountain area.
He is survived by one brother, Darrell Sayles (wife Ann) and one sister-in-law, Ruth Gilbert.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, December 10, 2021 at Calvary Churchyard, 2840 Hendersonville Road in Fletcher.
