Barbara Jeanene McLaughlin Stevens died in her home in Ada, Oklahoma, on October 27, 2021, with her family at her side.

Jeanene was born May 26, 1932, on her parents', William Gayle and Ruby Jane (French) McLaughlin, wheat and corn farm 9 miles south of Sutton, Nebraska. She was the third of four children, Betty Marie, William Edward (Billy), and Gwenda Gayle. Jeanene died in her home on October 27, 2021, with her family at her side.

Jeanene enjoyed a rich childhood growing up in the country. Jeanene loved to help on the farm with milking, collecting eggs, driving the tractor, as she loved the beauty and inspiration of nature. She attended Grove Country School for her first 8 years, which was across the road from her home, then attended Sutton High School. During this time, she would often spend some of the school week in town with her much loved grandparents, Edward and Dora Smith French. Jeanene was the great-granddaughter of Luther French, a founding father of Sutton.

Jeanene graduated as valedictorian from Sutton High School in 1949 with a Normal Training certificate which equipped her to teach country school. For one year she taught at Grove Country School. One of her students was her dear sister, Gwenda. Following her teaching career, she attended and graduated as a registered nurse from St. Elizabeth's School of Nursing in Lincoln, Nebraska. Jeanene married her high school sweetheart, James Harry Stevens, on August 29, 1954, in Sutton. They first lived in Superior, Nebraska, then moved to Ada, OK, in 1957 so that Jim could be a part of the laboratory staff of Ideal Cement.

This began a full and rewarding season, living in Ada all the rest of her life. Jim and Jeanene raised 4 children, Susan, Jim, Laura, and Christopher. She was very active and interested in supporting them in their school activities. She was a member at First United Methodist Church for over 60 years and gave richly of her gifts there. She helped with Sunday School teaching, Methodist Youth Fellowship, delivered altar flowers and assisted in administering communion to the local nursing homes, led a ladies' Bible study, provided leadership for a retirement age fellowship's monthly meal, and forged many long-lasting friendships. She also worked several years part-time at Valley View Hospital as a registered nurse. She and Jim enjoyed being a part of bridge clubs with special friends.

Jeanene was strongly motivated to reach out with love and care to those who are often overlooked, particularly children and the elderly. Family was a very important focus, especially her grandchildren in her later years. They were treated like kings and queens when in her presence. She always had a tub of ice cream and a jar of candy waiting. She captured God's beauty displayed in creation through her drawings and paintings. She enjoyed hospitality around the kitchen table. She was able to see the best in everyone and in every situation or circumstance.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Harry Stevens; her parents; her mother and father-in-law, Mary and Harry Stevens; her brother, Billy, and her sisters, Betty Sheridan and Gwen Hurst; her brother-in-law, Roger Sheridan; and her daughter-in-law, Leslie Stanley-Stevens.

Those left to cherish her memory are her brother-in-law, Tom Hurst; daughter, Susan (Larry) Parks; son, Jim (Cindy) Stevens; daughter, Laura French; and son, Christopher Stanley-Stevens; and 11 grandchildren, Kathryn (Chris) Flanigan, Elizabeth (Steve) Honea, Laura (Jon) Shea, Sarah (Luke) Hartman, Mary Caroline (Matt) Ardoin, David (Joelle) Parks, Amelia and Avery Stevens, Roman Alis, and Parker and Forrest Stanley-Stevens, and 12 great-grandchildren; Jimmy, Violet, and Fern Flanigan; Jason, Lilian, Peter, and Susan Honea; Jack, Owen, and Jude Shea; Ruby Hartman and Ada Jeanene Ardoin plus many more family members and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 11, at 11:00 in the Rollow Chapel of the United Methodist Church of Ada, Oklahoma.

Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Class, 129 West 14th Street, Ada, OK 74820 and the Alzheimer's Association, (act.alz.org)
