Stephen Thurston was the son of Stephen and Mary (St. Claire) Thurston of Stratham, New Hampshire. He was born there April 8, 1760 and married in 1784 Elizabeth or Betsey Wiggin, born October 10, 1762, daughter of Capt. Jonathan and Mary (Little) Wiggin of Stratham. Her grandmother was Molly Jaquith of Newbury, Mass. He died Jan. 23, 1861 [conflicts with headstone], aged 100 y. 9 m. and she died May 8, 1859, aged 97.

Mr. Thurston was a farmer in Stratham. In 1806 he moved to Cornish, Maine where he remained one year, and removed to West Madison, Maine. He entered the army of the revolution at an early age, and was at West Point under Gen. Wayne when Arnold left there so precipitately. He was there when Washington arrived, and saw him frequently.

At the time of the death of his wife it was said that they had six children, 54 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. They lived with their son Col. William, from whom they had never been separated more than a few days at a time since his birth. Their children were:

(1) William - born Jan. 11, 1786, married to Charity Eames.
(2) Mary - born March 15, 1792 and married March 23, 1815 Dea. Daniel Hobart of Solon, Maine.
(3) Betsey - born May 12, 1795 and married April 12, 1817 David Baker. Died Nov. 12, 1856. They resided in South Solon and she was a member of the Congregational church.
(4) Mehitable - born in Meredith, N.H. on November 8, 1797 and married May 18, 1817 to Reuben Martin, a farmer and lumberman.
(5) Jonathan - born 1801 and married Lucinda Emerson. [Died March 7, 1873] Submitted by Bob Toelle
