Architect. Born in England, Barnett became one of the best-known architects in the United States. After his 3-year apprenticeship with a builder in London, Barnett moved to St. Louis in 1839. He designed churches, hotels, public buildings, schools, town and country houses, the St. Louis waterworks and water tower, commercial and institutional buildings, the Missouri Governor's Mansion, but is best known for the work he did for St. Louisan Henry Shaw. He designed Shaw's country house and mausoleum, now both currently in the Missouri Botanical Gardens. Other architects who worked with Barnett include Henry Isaacs, Icarian Piquenard, Charles May, William Kirchner, Isaac Taylor and George Mills.
