Blythewood, South Carolina - Amy (Catherine) Elizabeth McCormick, 45, of Blythewood, South Carolina (formerly of Bloomington, Indiana) passed away December 1, 2021 after an extended illness. The daughter of Michael and Cynthia McCormick, she was born on November 1, 1976, in Lexington, SC.
Creative expression and a life of the mind were essential to Amy. From early school days she won numerous academic awards, including being chosen as one of only two 1994 South Carolina students named Presidential Scholars. Amy was awarded a B.A. with Honors in English Literature from the South Carolina Honors College and completed coursework for a master's degree in Religious Studies at the University of South Carolina. She worked in bookstores, as a freelance editor, and as an editor at academic publisher Bruccoli Clark Layman. A consummate storyteller, she wrote continually in many forms and was a gifted artist and painter (though she always noted, "I never wanted to be a writer for the sake of being a writer. I wanted to be a writer to glorify God.").
Amy's Christian faith was pure, deep, earnest, and unbounded by particular doctrine. She read and studied both the Bible and religious thinkers as a dedicated vocation. She participated in both the Antiochian Orthodox faith (attending All Saints Orthodox Church in Bloomington) and Southern Baptist churches (in her childhood home of West Virginia and most recently Sandy Level Baptist Church in Blythewood). Throughout, Amy radiated a clear connection with God. Those who spoke with her often recount a "humbling" inspiration in the faith she evidenced.
In nature, she found solace and God's expression. From childhood hikes through the West Virginia hills and "hollers" with her grandparents, to life on the farm in Blythewood, to long rambles with her daughter through the parks of Bloomington, nature restored and inspired her.
In recent years Amy's life was devoted to her daughter Marah. Motherhood gave her a playmate, a co-creator of stories, and a young soul to nurture. In this role Amy found the ongoing fulfillment of her creativity, caring spirit, and Christian mission.
Amy is preceded in death by grandparents Curtis and Delma McCormick and Franklin and Mildred Dyches.
She is survived by her daughter Marah, father Michael, mother Cynthia, brother Christopher (Jennifer), sister Robin (Andy), niece Devin, and grandmother (Sondra).
The family will receive visitors from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Sunday December 5, at Kornegay & Moseley Funeral Home (4645 Hard Scrabble Road, Columbia, SC 29229). The funeral service will take place at 2 PM on Monday December 6, at Sandy Level Baptist Church (408 Blythewood Rd, Blythewood, SC 29016).
