Educator & reformer. The daughter of a Prebyterian minister, Cairns developed a strong abolitionist sentiment from her father. After teaching school for one year, Cairns opened her own school in St. Louis, Missouri. Originally known as Kirkwood Seminary, the school continued to grow & prosper & eventually became known as Forest Park University for Women. One of the buildings was leased for use by the 1904 World's Fair to ease financial difficulties. A member of the St. Louis Woman's Christian Temperance Union, Cairns was instrumental in reviving interest in that organization. She became superintendent of the Missouri State WCTU Legislative Department & joined the Missouri Equal Suffrage Association. Cairns remained active in women's rights & equal education issues & spoke at the state capitol in behalf of woman suffrage in 1897 & 1899.
