Stage, motion picture, and television producer. Known as "Caftan's Courageous" for sometimes wearing a caftan to hide his plump figure, he also received wide publicity for having his jaws wired shut to keep him from overeating. He worked his entire adult life in show business. He is credited with discovering numerous stars including Michelle Pfeiffer, Steve Guttenberg, and Lisa Hartman. He also was a personal manger to stars like Ann-Margret, Peter Sellers, Tony Curtis, and many others. He was the promoter of the film "The Deer Hunter", and finally became rich and well known as producer of the Hollywood blockbuster "Grease" and the Broadway hit "La Cage aux Folles."
