Wife of Dr. Lewis Succumbs to Spanish Flu

Mrs. Wilhelmina P. Lewis, wife of Dr. Fred E. Lewis of this city, passed away on Monday night at the family home, where she had been cared for lovingly in quarantine by her husband over the past fortnight in her battle with the dreaded Spanish flu. She was only 30 years of age. Her brief life is a heartbreaking testament to the merciless onslaught of this terrible pandemic.

Mrs. Lewis was born in Boston's Back Bay neighborhood on April 3, 1888. Her father was William N. Reade, Esq., a notable lawyer. Her mother, Lydia P. Hopkins, was a descendant of the Rev. Eleazer Wheelock, founder and first president of Dartmouth College, of which Dr. Lewis is a graduate.

Young "Mina" was raised in Back Bay and then removed to Hanover with her family at the age of 14 when her father retired from full time work and became an occasional lecturer at the College. She was an apt student herself, being encouraged by her late father to pursue a career in law. Her frequent assertion was that, "my destiny is to be a loving wife and mother. I will win my case for that pursuit in any court of law and also in my father's study!" This was proven true when she met and married the much esteemed Dr. Fred E. Lewis in 1910, and further in 1913 when the happy couple welcomed their cherished son, Henry Reade ("Harry"), a dear and bright boy whose kindness and intelligence are well beyond his years.

Mrs. Lewis was a devout member of numerous women's groups and community societies, including Daughters of the American Revolution, Order of the Eastern Star, The Ladies' Aid, The Manchester Lyceum, and was active in many initiatives to provide for the impoverished residents of the city.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Fred; her adored son, Harry; her sister, Mrs. Hazel R. Brown of Chicago, Il.; her brother, Mr. Henry H. Reade of Portland, Me.; a beloved uncle, Mr. Philip H. Reade of Boston, and by several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends beyond number.

Mrs. Lewis communicated several final wishes to her husband before the culmination of her young life: Firstly, that there be no services due to the pandemic. Secondly, that written condolences be sent to her family members (c/o Dr. Fred E. Lewis), all of whom are much in need of supportive sentiments at this time. Finally, that donations be made in her memory to the Trinity M.E. Church Community Fund (c/o Mr. Walter Johnston, trustee).

Burial will take place this Thursday afternoon at 2:00 P.M. at the Dartmouth Cemetery in Hanover, where flowers may be sent (c/o Dartmouth College).
