James Gilliam was born about 1803 in Virginia. He married his first wife Margaret C Lawrence on 2 April 1832 (from Rutherford, Tennessee Marriage records). This Gilliam family came to Red River County, Texas in about 1837. On the 5 Dec 1850 RRCo Tx Census Record: James Gilliam was 46, a mechanic, born in Va, (wife) Margaret Gilliam age 38 and born in Tn, (children:) (1) Martha 18, (2)William 16, (3)Mary 14, (4)Ellen 10, (5)Jasame 8, (6)Margaret 6, (7) James 1. James Gilliam married again after the death of first wife Margaret to Aldarine Hughart on 11 March 1859 (from RRCo Tx County Clerks Marriage Book A page 91. On the 5 Aug 1860 RRCo Tx Census: James Gilliam 57, (2nd wife)Alderide Gilliam 42, (children from 1st wife: William 26, Jessamine 17, Margaret 15, James 10. On 1 Feb 1861, Texas became the seventh state to secede from the Union 166 to 8 over the objections of Sam Houston, the governor. Texas joined the Confederacy on 2 Mar 1861. Red River County, Texas, had at least 13 different outfits gathering men up to be mustered into the Confederacy. James Gilliam was first in a home company, the Savannah Blues, the 8th Brigade, Texas State Troops, then Company I, 27th Texas Cavalry, enlisting 10 March 1862 at Daingerfield, Texas.

marker has not been found. There are many stones placed in this cemetery with no names replacing the bois d'arc stobs.
