Barbara Jean Nelson
Barbara Jean Nelson, age 78, of Boise, formerly of Caldwell and Notus Idaho, passed away peacefully on November 22, 2021, surrounded by the love and support of her three surviving children. Graveside services will be held at Canyon Hill Cemetery in Caldwell, Friday, December 10, 2021, at 3 PM. Kurt Hardenbrook will officiate. Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery.
Barbara "Jean" was born in Wagoner, OK on December 15, 1942 to Olnie Lee and Opal Mae Cannon (Mitchell). She attended schools in the Canyon County District where she proved to excel academically by skipping two grades and becoming valedictorian of her class. She graduated from Boise Junior College in 1968 where she earned an Associate of Science Degree in Nursing with four children in tow.
Barbara was highly regarded by her patients, peers, and nursing colleagues alike. She spent most of her nursing career at St. Lukes RMC where she made the front page of the Idaho Statesman caring for newborns and at the Boise VA Hospital serving our Veterans.
Barbara enjoyed being an active member of the Girls Glee Club in high school where she received her Letter Award. She loved reading mystery novels and could easily finish a book in a day. She was an avid football fan, but mostly liked watching BSU play (go big blue!). Her other passions included being outdoors, listening to music, doing crossword puzzles, and dabbling in the arts.
Barbara is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Nick and Glenda Young (Cerva) of Meridian and Dennis and Cheryl O'Dell (Cerva) of Nampa and by her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Debra Sower (Mounteer) of Meridian. She has six grandchildren; Nicol and Taylor Young – Dane Gudmundson – Madyson, Jacob, and Jarod Sower, plus eight great grandchildren, She also leaves behind three sisters (Wanda, Kathy, & Patty), one brother (Warren), a favorite cousin (Doug), and five nieces (Tammy, Teresa, Candy, Tracy, and Kellie).
Barbara is preceded in death by her father and mother and her beloved sons, Ronald Dean Cerva and Bruce Eugene Cerva and one niece, Jana Martinez (Layher).
Our mother, our friend – Rest in Peace, we will miss you and love you always. Glenda, Cheryl, and Michael
