Walter D. Wilson April 28, 1928 - November 24, 2021 Macon, Georgia - Walter D. Wilson passed from this life on November 24, 2021. His Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, December 1, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Vineville United Methodist Church with Dr. Jimmy Asbell and Reverend John Irwin officiating. Visitation will be held after the service. Private interment will be at Macon Memorial Park Cemetery.
Walt was born on April 28, 1928, at the Oglethorpe Infirmary overlooking Tattnall Square Park where he played as a child. He attended Alexander II Grammar School and graduated in 1945 from Lanier High School for Boys. In August 1946, he married Hilda Irene Madden. While employed with the Warner Robins Air Logistics Command, he attended both the University of Georgia and the University of Ohio at the Robins Air Force Base Center. He graduated from the US Air Force Command Staff and Air War Colleges. He retired in 1987 after 39 years of service with the Meritorious Service Medal and a Commendation Citation from the Commanding General of the Air Force Logistics Command.
Upon retirement from the Department of Defense, he became a Registered Representative from Smith, Brown & Groover investment firm. In 1989, he was selected to organize and incorporate the Better Business Bureau of Central Georgia, serving as its President until 2002.
He was a founding member and Vice President of Government Benefits Information Services, Inc. and President of the local chapter of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association. He served as Board Chairman of the Macon-Bibb County Board of Health and also of the Development Authority of Bibb County. He also served on the boards of the U.S. Selective Service, the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Middle Georgia, the Central Georgia Speech and Hearing Board, and Vineville Christian Towers. He was Area Governor of Toastmasters International, President of the Southside Macon Lions Club, and served in leadership roles in the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years. He was founder and first Derby Director of the Middle Georgia Soap Box Derby.
He was an active member of Vineville United Methodist Church and in the Webb Sunday School class. He was a supporter of the Methodist Home for Children and Youth, Wesley Glen Ministries, and The Rescue Mission of Middle Georgia.
He was a member of Idle Hour Golf & Country Club. He was a founding resident of Carlyle Place, and the family extends their grateful appreciation to the staff for the care he received there.
He was preceded in death by his father, George Wilson; mother, Opal Wylene McDaniel Wilson; wife, of 72 years, Hilda M. Wilson; daughter, Karen Wilson Walker; and brothers; James Roy Wilson and William "Ed" Wilson.
He is survived by his grandson, Samuel L. Mullis, Jr., (Ashly) of Juliette, GA; granddaughter, Lauren A. Mullis of Macon; great-grandchildren; Allyssah A. Mullis, Kari Mullis, Savannah L. Mullis, Anna Grace Mullis, Jace Goolsby (Macie), and Micah Adkerson of Juliette, and Aniyah A. Mullis, and Noah Mullis of Macon; nephews; Eddie Wilson (Robin) of Juliette, and Keith Wilson of Roanoke, VA; niece, Michelle Smith (Curtis) of Albany, Georgia; and sister-in-law, Sara Reese.
