True Love Never Ends, It Continues In Heaven...Two Lives Well Lived

Jack Haston Holt, PhD, P.E., March 21, 1928-November 3, 2021; Betty Lewis Holt, January 1, 1929-November 27, 2021.

After nearly 74 years of marriage, Jack and Betty Holt passed away within 3 weeks and 3 days of each other at their home in Spicewood, Texas. They were surrounded by family, and their beloved private nurse.

Jack was born in a cotton patch in Gouldbusk, Texas on March 21, 1928, while his mama, Lucy, was picking cotton. He grew up in Waco, Texas where he met and married his best friend and soulmate, Betty Lewis. Betty was born and raised in Waco, Texas.

After graduating from Waco High School at age 17, Jack enlisted in the Navy. During his two years of service, he witnessed the Bikini Atoll atomic bomb test in the South Pacific Ocean. After his honorable discharge, Jack returned to Waco to marry Betty. The two then went off to college where Jack completed his Bachelor's Degree in Agricultural Engineering, June 1, 1951 at Texas A&M University. Six days later, on June 7, 1951, Jack was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. Betty was right by his side.

Jack's 22 years of service in the United States Air Force led him to various assignments including Cape Canaveral (Florida), Wright Patterson AFB (Ohio), Kisarazu (Japan), Laughlin AFB (Del Rio, TX), Thule AFB (Greenland), Ent AFB (Colorado Springs, CO), Maxwell AFB (Alabama), Vietnam, and Ellington AFB (Seabrook, TX). Jack received a Bronze Star Medal as well as several others for his service in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant Colonel from the United States Air Force in 1973. Betty was right by his side.

While in the Air Force, Jack continued his education at Texas A&M University where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree, a Master's Degree, and a PhD in Civil Engineering. Needless to say, Jack and Betty were proud and diehard Aggies!

In 1979, Jack started his own engineering firm, Jack H. Holt & Associates, in Austin, Texas. Betty was always there to support him. The name of the firm was later changed to Holt Engineering as their daughter, Linda and later their grandson, Travis joined the firm.

Jack was a sports enthusiast and exercise nut. Either playing tennis, swimming, or working out in his home gym, he made exercising a daily priority. Betty also enjoyed exercise and could walk faster than most people half her age, and even faster after her knee replacements!

Jack continued to play tennis into his 90s. During family gatherings, he would organize games for his entire family and would have rewards for the winners or chores for the losers. Betty loved playing games too, especially with the family.

Betty was a perfect wife and mom. She made Jack's service to his country possible by creating a new home life for every move and assignment. She missed and worried about Jack during his deployments, but stayed strong for her children. She loved traveling all over the world with Jack, both for his assignments and vacations. The couple had many friends who would often join them on vacations. Betty's most favorite vacations were those she took with her daughters every summer. The six girls traveled all over the United States, and even to Canada, France, and the Caribbean. Shopping, eating, and playing games were the highlights of those girls' trips. Betty loved to garden and was a member of the Zilker Garden Club. Betty also loved bird watching. She had many feeders outside her windows and would often sit and enjoy watching the birds who came to them. The one thing Betty loved most though, was her family. She was immensely proud of all of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Betty never met a stranger. She loved visiting and would often strike up a conversation with anyone she ran into. Those conversations almost always led to her telling about her family. She was a very proud mama. Betty lived her life full of positivity. She followed the rule "if you can't say something nice, then don't say anything" and never spoke ill of anyone….ever. She led a life we should all strive to lead. She was uplifting, positive, caring, and genuinely concerned. Betty would always be there if you needed anything. She was a great mother, and friend to so many people. If you had the opportunity to meet Betty, you would have a friend for life. It didn't matter if it was 5 minutes, or 92 years. She was the best.

Jack and Betty are survived by their five children and spouses, Beverly and Ken Lyons, Linda Holt and Don Beal, Jan and Stan Alonzo, Kathy and Jim Erickson, and Chip and Linda Holt. They are also survived by nine grandchildren, Kelly Lyons, Katy Buss, Travis Bryant, Lindsey Bryant, Natalee Blanchat, Lauren Holt, Jack Haston Holt III, Hunter Holt, Harrison Holt, five great grandchildren, Abby Anzek, Ruby Nass, Presley Buss, Holden Holt, and soon to arrive in December, Caden Daem. Betty is also survived by two brothers, Jerry Lewis, and James Lewis.

The Holt family would like to express a very special thank you to Jack and Betty's amazing, and loving caregivers, their sweet friend and angel, Michelle Ledbetter, as well as their close friends, Bill Jackson, Bertha Guajardo, and Cesar Guajardo.
