Charles "Charlie" Thomas Lorne Archer

 

Charles was born April 25th, 1911 and died March 10th, 1994. He was brought up on the farm in Bradford. He went to a one room school and was 12 when Howard was born in 1923.

 

He joined the Canadian Army in March 1943 and served as an ambulance driver in the medical corp. He served in Italy, France and Holland. At one point in the war Charlie and Howard did meet up in Holland.

 

When stationed in Holland in 1944 on the front line in Nijmegen Charlie was billeted by a local family named Middelveen. Also staying there was Annetje "Annette" van den Berg from Rotterdam and friend of the Middelveen family. Annette at the time was working in the office of the Dutch police. Annette was born February 24th, 1917 and died January 19th, 2008.

 

Charlie and Annette were married in Rotterdam on July 12th, 1945. Their first daughter Annette Mae (Anne-Mae) Archer was born February 9th, 1946 in Rotterdam. By this time Charlie was back home in Ontario. Annette and Anne-Mae came to Canada on the Queen Mary a ship full of war brides and children. They landed in Halifax, Pier 21 on August 31st, 1946.

 

Charlie and Annette's second daughter Marina Louise (Mary-Lou) was born June 18th, 1947 at Toronto's Women's College Hospital in Toronto.

 

In 1947 Charlie purchased a Taxi and Trucking Company in Marmora Then in 1953 they moved to Orillia to help run the B/A gas station for Lillian and Bert Burnet
