CAUTION-William and Nancy Brooks had a daughter Nancy (1780 VA-1851 VA). Her husband was Lemuel Clyburn. The Nancy Midyett added to this memorial is incorrect.

Enlisted Oct 1776 in the 6th Battalion of Cont. Forces commended by Col. James Hendricks served as Private in Capt. Sean Jordan's Company.

Enlisted October 1777 in Culpepper Co., VA and served one month as a Private in Capt. Richard Waugh Company, Col James Barber's VA Regiment. In Botecourt County enlisted Feb 1781 and served as Private in Captain James Wood's Co., Colonel Hugh Crocket's VA Regiment and was in the battle of Allamance and Whitsall's Mills. He served one month, enlisted Nov 1781 and served as Private in Captain Thos. Hamilton's Company, Col Charles Dabney's VA Regiment and was discharged May 1, 1782.

Served as Sargent in the 5th Troop of VA Light Dragoons commanded by Col. Theodric Bland for month of Nov 1777.

Soldier lived in Culpepper Co., VA at enlistment and later moved to Botetourt Co., VA, also enlisted there in Feb 1781, soldier married Nancy on 9 Nov 1769 & Soldier died 24 Jan 1841, widow applied 29 Aug 1843, Tazewell, aged 94.

From the "Annals of Tazewell Co., VA" pg 246 (1841): "It appearing to the satisfaction of the Court, that William Brooks, deceased, was a Revolutionary pensioner, that he departed this life on the 24th day of Jan 1841, leaving his widow, Anna Brooks, and the following being all his heirs and legal representatives, to wit, John Brooks, William Brooks, Margaret Kirk, Elizabeth Stephenson, Nancy Clyburn, Sally Todd, Polly Brooks and Louise Asberry (Louise is Levicy or Livicy), it is ordered that the same be certified."

There are many records in the Tazewell Court House of the Participation of William Brooks in county affairs, and of his services to his friends and neighbors. He and three of his sons were signers of the application for the formation of Tazewell County in 1793, then a part of Wythe County. He served on the first Grand Jury impaneled in Tazewell County, VA in November 1800.
