Sarah Rowland Townsend
June 26, 1961 - November 26, 2021
Kansas City, Missouri - Sarah (Liza) Rowland Townsend was born June 26, 1961, in Moberly, Missouri and died at her home in Kansas City, Missouri on November 26, 2021. She was the eldest child of Landon Hill Rowland and Sarah Fidler Rowland. After her father graduated from law school the young family moved from Boston to Kansas City in 1962 where Liza attended Border Star Elementary School, Bingham Junior High School, and graduated from Sunset Hill School in 1979. She earned a BA in Art History at Smith College.
In 1990, Liza married Harold Guyon (Guy) Townsend III; they met in the 8th and 9th grade Sunset and Pem-Day school production of The Mikado. With their three children, Liza and Guy established their home a few blocks from where Liza grew up.
After college, Liza spent time in Italy and New York before she returned to Kansas City to become a community leader, serving as a board member and event chair for some of the region's key social and arts organizations. She focused on promoting social welfare and civil liberties, education, and the arts, and was a founding board member of Turning Point, Center for Hope and Healing and served on its Advisory Board. She also served on the boards of the Child Protection Center, the ACLU, and as chair of the American Royal Gala to benefit Therapeutic Riding Centers. She served for six years on the board of Lead Bank in Kansas City.
Her interest in education and the arts led to board-level positions at schools locally and regionally, including the board of the Fountain Valley School of Colorado, Pembroke Hill Alumni Executive Board, and St. Paul's Episcopal Day School Annual Giving Campaign and Cultural Arts Chair. She was active in the Smith College Club of Kansas City, serving as Club President for two years. She served for over a decade on the advisory board for the Harriman-Jewell Series. Her arts support included a five-year tenure on the board of the Kansas City Ballet. Her work with the Nelson-Atkins Museum Art spanned a decade and included co-chairing the opening of the Bloch Building.
Liza pursued educational opportunities throughout her life. She earned her JD from the University of Kansas in 1993. And in 2017, she returned to KU for a Master of Social Work. She applied her skills, connecting the homeless to services through reStart and on the board of the Center for Practical Bioethics in Kansas City.
Liza's lifelong interest in design and art brought imagination and flare to all of her endeavors. Her visual gifts were evident in every aspect of her life, from the personal to the public.
Liza is survived by her mother, Sarah Rowland, her husband, Guy, their children, Edward, Marjorie and Harriet; brother, Matthew Rowland, his wife Jennifer and their daughters, India and Beatrix; brother, Joshua Rowland, his wife Ann and their children, Alice and Wilfred; Liza was preceded in death by her father, Landon Hill Rowland and her brother Benjamin Jones Rowland. Services will be held at 4 pm on Wednesday, December 1, 2021 at Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral in Kansas City. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Center for Practical Bioethics in honor of Liza.
