The Rev. Dr. Charles Lee Simmons Sr. left behind his mortal frame on Sept. 27, 2021, on his final Permanent Change of Station.
His final assignment is in Beulah land in the Heavenly Quadrant. A Celebration of Life will be held at Christ Community Church, 2222 West 100th Avenue in Anchorage, Alaska, on Sunday, Oct. 10, 2021, at 4 p.m., with a viewing available at 3 p.m. The service will also be available via livestream through the church website at www.c3ak.com.
Dr. Simmons graduated from Anchorage Community College, University of Alaska Anchorage, South Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary and earned a Ph.D. in Christian ministry from Trinity Theological Seminary. Mr. Simmons was a member of the Under Age Warriors having served with the World War II 8th Army Occupation Forces in Japan in 1949, at 16 years of age. He entered the United States Air Force in 1954, and retired in 1975 as a Master Sergeant. Sgt. Simmons was an Army WWII era, USAF Korean War era and Vietnam War veteran.
Between his Army stint and Air Force, he worked several different jobs including gandy dancer, plaster company owner, apple picker and professional counselor.
He and his deceased wife Janet owned the Alaska Mud Puddle ceramic wholesale for several years and were accomplished ceramic artists and master airbrush artists. His military service took him to numerous stateside bases and overseas. His last overseas base was Phan Rang Air Base from January 1969 to January 1970. He served as Non-Commissioned Officer in charge of Maintenance Supply Liaison in the 35th Tactical Fighter Wing. For his service in Vietnam, Sgt.
Simmons was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award for Valor, Vietnam Service Medal with Four Campaign Stars for the wing's action against enemy forces, the Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. Dr.
Simmons was an ordained Southern Baptist Minister who served numerous churches in the Anchorage and Mat-Su Valley area.
Dr. Simmons and his wife Bonnie became snowbirds in 2006, where he continued to preach and do a Bible study in RV parks in Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Janet Virginia Simmons in 2000; and is survived by his wife of 16 years, Bonnie Simmons; children, Charles Jr.
(Gina), Connie Crawford (David), Bryan (Donna) and Tracy (Karen); and 12 grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Christ Community Church, Alaska or the Gary Sinise Foundation.
