After enjoying the blessings of her family over the Thanksgiving weekend, Ann Norfleet Taylor passed into God's loving arms on November 29, 2021 in Virginia Beach, VA. She was 92 years old.

The daughter of Henry Buff Norfleet and Carlotta Douglas Stephens, Ann was born on July 20, 1929 in Suffolk, VA. Her family moved to Norfolk and then from there to the north end of Virginia Beach where her father built one of the early homes on the oceanfront in 1936. The lot was cleared with two mules and a large scoop. The second of four sisters, Ann often shared stories of riding the rail bus from there to school each day, and of the summer weekends when their three cousins from Norfolk would come to stay with them at the beach. All seven girls would head down the beach together to visit friends or perhaps go listen to music at the Cavalier Beach Club. She recalls times when all seven of them had dates and they had to sign in and out on the blackboard. It was the last person's job to turn off the lights.

Ann graduated from Oceana High School and attended Longwood College. In 1949 she was selected as Miss Princess Anne County and was crowned by Sydney Kellam. She was also asked to be Miss Liberty in the annual Fourth of July Parade. Her beauty caught the eye of one Dawson Taylor as he saw her leaving the Beach Theater one evening. Dawson had previously dated her older sister Carlotta, so he knew where to find her, and he and Ann went out the very next week.
Ann and Dawson were married on April 7, 1951 at the original Galilee Church at the oceanfront on 19th Street, and enjoyed a wonderful, loving marriage of over 70 years. Together they raised four children and celebrated life to the fullest. The dance parties that they or their circle of friends hosted, and ones they attended at the Princess Anne Country Club are legendary. They also shared many winter trips south with their company of friends to walk the beach, golf and spend time together.

Ann was a devoted wife and loving mother who set a wonderful example for her entire family. She volunteered her time with the Junior League, Virginia Beach General Hospital and Galilee Church. Ann proudly served for eight years on the Virginia Beach School Board. Many of her contributions to the community, however, were in individual acts of kindness not recognized by anyone but the recipient. She loved sewing and knitting, especially prayer shawls and knit hats for newborns and cancer patients. Ann was also an accomplished gardener and pretty handy around the house with painting, wallpapering and repair projects. She was a stickler for manners, grammar, thank you notes and proper attire. Ann was a caring and giving individual, who left an endearing impression on all those she met. Her passion, however, was her family, and she welcomed every opportunity to gather them all together. For years there was a standing invitation for dinner at her house every Monday night.

Ann was predeceased by her three sisters, Carlotta Wick, Nancy Carpenter and Peggy Fuqua. She is survived by her husband of seventy years, Russell Dawson Taylor, Sr. of Virginia Beach, her three sons Bob Taylor (Marion), Russ Taylor (Christine) and Joe Taylor (Hazel) all of Virginia Beach, and nine grandchildren: Catherine Anderson (Jared), Taylor Koch (Kaitlyn), Meg Walbridge (Michael), Robie Taylor, Van Gray, Jody Taylor, Doug Taylor, Dawson Taylor and Grace Taylor, and one great grandchild on the way. She was also predeceased by her daughter Buff Taylor Koch who died of breast cancer in 1997.

A memorial service will be conducted at Galilee Episcopal Church at 11:00am on Tuesday, December 7, 2021. A reception will follow at the Princess Anne Country Club. Ann's ashes will be interred at a later date at Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, especially sunflowers which were far from her favorite, memorial donations are suggested to Galilee Episcopal Church, 3928 Pacific Ave., Virginia Beach, VA 23451 (www.galileechurch.net) or to Buff's Garden, PO Box 641, Virginia Beach, VA 23451 (www.buffsgarden.com). Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.hdoliver.com.
