He was born on July 11, 1936, in Bowie, Texas to Jimmie Perryman Hogan and Irene Evanell (Powell) Hogan. He married Barbara June Smead on February 4, 1954. He was a graduate of Lubbock High School (1955) and Texas Technological College (now Texas Tech University) (1959). Following graduation, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force, where he served as a Navigator, Bombardier, and Missile Crewmember. He retired in 1981, having earned the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was a Vietnam Veteran.
LTC Hogan earned a Navigator Rating, Senior Navigator Rating, Missile Badge, and Senior Missile Badge, and was the recipient of several decorations, including the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Combat Readiness Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award with three Oak Leaf Clusters, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, and Combat Crew Badge.
Following his Air Force career, he worked as the Internal Safety Director and Risk Management Coordinator for the City of Lubbock and worked as an insurance adjuster for Crawford and Company. He enjoyed traveling to many places and always enjoyed meeting new people. It was often said that he never met a stranger.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, by his parents, his brother Billy Mac Hogan, and by his oldest son, Don Hogan.
Through his many accomplishments, what Jim held most precious was his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was a kind friend and mentor to all, and his memory will be treasured.
