Her Journey

Evelyn Inez Bell-Dean was born in Darnestown, Maryland on January 3, 1929 to the late John Henson Bell and Annie Elizabeth Russell Bell.
In addition to her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by her siblings Edna, Howard, Mary, Charlotte, Anna, Sterling, Berkley, Lorraine and Cora. Dorothy, the youngest is the last surviving sibling.
Evelyn received her education through the Montgomery County, MD and Washington, DC Public School Systems where she graduated from Cardoza High School in Washington, DC. After graduation, she relocated to Chicago, Illinois to become caretaker for her sister Edna, which is where she met her future husband, Robert Lee Watson.
Evelyn married Robert Lee Watson on August 16, 1952. Born to this union were three children: Sheila Marie McDuffie, Sharon Lynette Freeman and Robert Lee Watson, Jr. In 1956, the family relocated to Gary, Indiana. As her life journey continued she later married Robert L. Dean.
She worked at National Can Company and Simmons Mattress Company in various capacities. She later pursued a career in nursing working at Greater Southeast Community Hospital, Washington National Rehabilitation Hospital and as a private duty nurse.
Evelyn was a member of Way of the Cross Holiness Church in Washington, DC during her formative years. She committed her life to Christ at a young age. She also held membership at Tarrytown Missionary Baptist Church in Gary, Indiana, and Bethel Missionary Baptist in Chicago Height, Illinois.
Lastly, she became a member of Israel Baptist Church in Washington, DC and was a faithful member of the Missionary Ministry until illness limited her participation. Evelyn was known for her expert sewing abilities and often made wedding gowns as well as other clothing. It was no surprise to often find her home filled with crafts, fabric, knitting items as well as sewing machines. She even ventured into upholstery and shared her expertise by teaching classes at the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) in Gary, Indiana. Not only was Evelyn known for her sewing and crafting talent, but she was also known for her cooking. If you visited Evelyn she always had a plate ready to serve especially her strawberry shortcake that was always a welcomed dessert at gatherings.
Evelyn (GiGi) leaves to cherish her memory, daughters Sheila M. McDuffie (George), Sharon L. Freeman, son Robert L. Watson, Jr. (Antoinette); four grandsons Brandon Freeman (Stephanie), John Sheffield, Lloyd Channing McGuffin, Cameron Watson; granddaughter Danielle Watson; two great grandsons Gabriel Elijah Hernandez-Sheffield and Jacob Watson Freeman and great-great Evelyn Taylor Freeman; sister Dorothy Bell-Beamon; sisters-in-law Florence Bell and Ida Pearl Green; cherished family friend, Charles Field and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives, friends and church family.
