Tony M. Byers, age 85, died peacefully on Wednesday, November 17, 2021 at Gilchrist Hospice Towson after having been stricken by a severe stroke several months earlier.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jane Hamlin Byers who lives in Catonsville and where they raised their children: Gary Mark, Phillip Hamlin and Catherine Byers-Wagner. Phil, his wife, Christina and daughters, Hope and Julia, live in Baltimore County as do Cathy, husband Jeff and sons Ethan and Eric.
Tony, son of Seth and Bessie Simmons Byers was raised in Pickens, South Carolina with his predeceased siblings Sylvia, David, Ramona and the youngest, Daniel, who resides in Pickens with his wife Anne. Their two daughters, their husbands and two grandchildren each also make their homes in South Carolina.
Tony was a graduate of Pickens High School where he succeeded in football which won him a full college athletic scholarship to be a Gamecock all four years at the University of South Carolina. He played the game in Canada for a year before being drafted into the Army in 1958 playing football with other GI's stationed in Germany and France. There he met Jane who was teaching dependents in our Army schools at La Rochelle. They married in Columbia, South Carolina where Jane continued teaching elementary school and Tony completed his courses to also teach. After a summer working at a Colorado family resort they settled into living in Catonsville where Tony had a full career of 33 years teaching and with school administration in Baltimore County Public Schools.
Retirement years were welcomed with a mix of annual trips to other countries and family time in Florida and the Eastern Shore. The football channels often kept the TV on.
A celebration of Tony's life will be a part of this year's holiday gatherings with Pastor Rick Powell, minister at Christian Temple Church, 5820 Edmondson Ave., presiding and family members sharing memories not to forget. We may sing one of Tony's favorite hymns: "Precious Lord, Take My Hand" or "Amazing Grace".
