Johann George Otto Stuart von Schmidt auf Altenstadt was born into Dutch nobility, allowing him to use the honorific title Jonkheer (abbreviated Jhr.), meaning Squire in English. In 1866, he was named Civil Servant in the Dutch East Indies in Cheribon (now Cirebon). In 1868, he became Overseer 2nd Class (similar to Mayor). In 1870, he started working in Bagelen and after that in Pekalongan. In 1880, he became Assistant-Resident of Ambarawa, a position he held until 1884. In 1887, he was named Assistant-Resident of Limbangan. In 1891, he was named Resident of Madioen (nowadays spelled Madiun). A year later, in 1892, he became Resident of Batavia (nowadays Jakarta). In 1897, he retired as Resident of Batavia, after which he returned to the Netherlands.
