Arthur Bockmann, 87, of Poughkeepsie, formerly of North Bergen, New Jersey and New Paltz, died after a series of strokes on Thursday, December 29 at Vassar Hospital. He remained active until recently, still driving his car, and enjoying this Thanksgiving with all the family. Born on March 23, 1918, he was the son of Arthur Bockmann and Nellie Manser Bockmann. Arthur was a graduate of Union hill High School, Union City, New Jersey, and was a World War II Army veteran and served in the Pacific. He was one of the first American Troops to enter Tokyo after the surrender of Japan. He worked as a photoengraver for the Neo-Gravure Printing Company in Weehawken, New Jersey, until his retirement, when he and his wife Clara moved to their self-constructed dream house near Mohonk in New Paltz.
He is survived by his wife Clara, who resides at Mountain View Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre in New Paltz; his daughter, Karen Bahrenburg and her husband John; his granddaughter Karen Cook and her husband Kevin; and his five-greatgrandchildren: Alexander and Michael Cook and Clara, Max and Hannah Janzen. He is also survived by his sister Audrey Alexander and her husband George, who resides in Arizona.
Arthur has donated his remains to the Albany Medical College Anatomical Gift Program. His remains will be returned to the family and a memorial gathering of family and f=close friends will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 2 Jefferson Plaza, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.
