Barbara Lynn Mercer, 83, resident of Carroll Lutheran Village of Westminster, passed away on Sunday, November 21, 2021 at her home.
Born in Washington D.C., she was the daughter of the late Leslie Frederick and Dorothy Hamilton (Marsh) Gladden. She was the childhood sweetheart and cherished wife of John Ronald Mercer; they were married in 1956.
Barbara was a graduate of Laurel High School, class of 1956. Along with her husband, she was the owner of Mercer Floor and Home Carpet One in Historic Westminster.
She enjoyed crafting a comfortable home for her loved ones, solving complex puzzles, classic murder mysteries, traditional biscotti, spoiling her grandchildren, and crafts where she could make beautiful home decor items such as throw blankets, decorative ceramics, and holiday ornaments. She was a member of Westminster Baptist Church.
A value she held most dear was striving to have the true kind of beauty, the kind that came from within: Barbara strived to live by example in cultivating this kind of beauty: she showered her grandchildren with love; volunteered to teach children from marginalized communities; often extended a seat at her table for coworkers, friends, neighbors, and others who needed a home-cooked meal or a place to be for the holidays; volunteered in various non-profits to support the local community; and many other acts of kindness.
Surviving her are children Denny Wayne Mercer and his wife, Donna, and Brooke Diane (Mercer) Farrell and her husband, Jim; sister, Carole Rothstein of Baltimore; 6 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved son John Ronald Mercer, Jr. and brother Wayne Gladden.
The family will welcome friends on Friday, November 26, 2021 from 4 to 6pm at Pritts Funeral Home & Chapel, 412 Washington Rd., Westminster. MD 21157. Funeral services will be Saturday, November 27, 2021 at 10:30 am at Westminster Baptist Church, 354 Crest Lane, Westminster, MD 21157. Interment will be at Meadow Branch Cemetery; 818 Old Westminster Rd., Westminster, MD 21158.
