Valerie Maxim passed away peacefully at home on June 12, 2021, from a recurrence of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. She was 73.
Born Teckla Margaret Valerie Roe to Ernest and Teckla (Mattson) Roe in 1948, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Val and her family soon moved back to Alaska. She and her two siblings grew up along with the burgeoning City of Anchorage. They spent their youth walking the dirt roads of the small town, biking, and fishing the Anchorage creeks. They never missed an Anchorage Fur Rendezvous, and the family was excited to be present at the giant bonfire on the Park Strip on June 30, 1958, to celebrate Alaska becoming the 49th state. She attended East Anchorage High School and studied business at Anchorage Community College.
Val worked part-time for her in-laws' painting/drywall business, Totem Painting & Decorating, when her children were small. Later she served many years as the indispensable Office Manager for Swanson General Contractors, and then Penney Property Management before she retired. In her retirement, Val moved into the Thomas Center for Senior Leadership, in the apartment adjacent to her sister Mary. The two enjoyed many memorable trips together, including a cruise to Mexico and two European vacations.
Val and her husband Allen Maxim and their children enjoyed many summer weekends at the family cabin on Beaver Lake, and later in Homer. They spent time there helping build her parent's home after they retired, and enjoyed many weekends fishing for the abundant halibut and King crab in Kachemak Bay.
Her husband Al and her brother Ernie Roe predeceased her, as did her parents. She is survived by her children: Travis Jay Maxim (Kelly), Theresa "Traci" Kay Maxim-Johnson (Randy), as well as four grandchildren, Victoria and Samantha Maxim, Ethan and Beth Johnson, and her sister Mary (Roe) Johnstone. Her family and friends remember her for a wonderful sense of adventure, her smile, humor and quick wit, her great laugh and her love and caring nature.
Final arrangements were handled by Evergreen Memorial Chapel. In lieu of flowers, cards may be sent to her sister at the Thomas Center. Val's cremated remains will be interred in the Columbarium at the Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery. No services are planned.
